January 2008, Lawrenceville, GA

Placing the ATM in the bed of a stolen pickup truck, the thief thinks he’s home free. Using the location information and map from ESP,  police easily locate their suspect on the highway.  He tries to flee, however, when making a quick turn, the weight of the ATM causes the truck to flip on its side.  The suspect is taken into custody. The ATM machine and the full $102,000 inside are recovered by police.

Bungling Bandit

Drive-Through Disaster
Three thieves in Dallas, Texas, created their own drive-through window with disastrous results. The men smashed a stolen van into a store hoping to snag the ATM machine inside. But, the crash generated so much debris that the tires of the van lost traction and the van wouldn’t budge. The crooks took off on foot, and were nabbed just a few minutes later.

Curb Service
How many robbers does it take to rob a bank with a concrete curb? Apparently, it took three of them to come up with this ingenious idea. The trio used the curb to break a window and get inside. They then rammed the curb into the ATM, knocking the ATM off of its bolts. While carrying the machine out of the store, one of the robbers tripped, dropping the ATM. Another fell out of the getaway van as it pulled up to the scene. The driver took off, leaving the ATM, the clumsy thief and an unanswered question behind: Where did they get a concrete curb?

Wanted: Map and Brain.
A misdirected robber in Boston went into a copying center, presented a note and said “this is a bank robbery.” The copy guy replied “this isn’t a bank.” The robber asked for directions to a bank, went there and robbed it, netting only $200. Shortly afterwards, he found his way to another bank, robbed it and pulled in just $25. As he drove away, he got a flat tire, then was covered in red, when a dye pack activated. Undeterred, he continued on his way, found a gas station, and asked to borrow a customer’s cell phone to report his truck stolen. Police nabbed him at the gas station. A spokesperson said the thief “must have been on something.”

Slow Lane Stick-Up
A bizarre robbery in Philadelphia was thwarted after the suspect tried to escape using his walker. Witnesses say the thief was hobbling down the street carrying a pile of money when a dye pack activated. With himself and his transportation covered in red, he tried to make a “dash” into a nearby cab. He wasn’t fast enough. A passerby grabbed the walker from the thief, preventing him from making his getaway.
