DNA Breakthrough Against Cash Crime

On September 15th, during an event at the City of London Police Headquarters, the Security DNA Partnership announced the launch of a revolutionary new DNA based security device that will help catch those who attempt bank and other cash raids and ultimately protect customers and staff.

Criminal activity is increasingly becoming more sophisticated, better organized, more violent. Furthermore today crime is becoming increasingly international. Also the single European Currency has made it difficult to identify the origin of stolen cash. This trend is calling for new tools to be added to the Security armory.

3SI has responded with Security DNA, and has added a unique deterrent feature to its product range’s staining performance, combining overt (ink and dye) and covert (DNA) security devices. Security DNA is the world’s first dye security system to link the criminal to the crime scene, stained cash to every single 3SI staining device and to its original owner. It can be used to mark cash during a bank robbery or Safe, ATM, pavement or Cash in Transit attacks. Security DNA is a covert system which works without the criminals knowing. Whilst they are carrying out their criminal activity, they are marked with an indelible DNA code. Security DNA increases the criminal’s risk of arrest and helps deter future attacks

End 2003, 3SI Security Systems conducted an audit, together with security specialists from Royal Bank of Scotland to test the « Chain of Evidence » created by SecurityDNA. This led to the Partnership between City of London Police, Crime Stoppers, 3SI Security Systems, PFSLD, and the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. The Partnership was formed to provide a proven audit trail and to show the uniqueness and flexibility of Security DNA to help convict the criminal. Today, the proven audit trail is a fact.

To date, the DNA technology has already permitted 9 positive identifications : 4 in UK and 5 in Germany. Valuable evidence has been recovered and 6 suspects were arrested thanks to these identifications.

DNA Used to Link Stolen Banknotes

Mid December 2003, a branch was held up at a leading savings bank in Dusseldorf, Germany and 16.800 Euro were stolen.  An activation of the 3SI ThinPac was witnessed, but there was no immediate recovery.

Until recently, stained banknotes were recovered by the German police forces.  The notes were sent to CyperMark, TTI, for DNA code identification.  All notes appeared to have the same DNA code.  The code was traced back to the branch in Dusseldorf by the 3SI locational database.
